He was awarded an International Emmy Award in 2018 for his performance in the Danish TV drama Herrens Veje, which was shown in the UK in 2019 as Ride in the Storm.In addition to his home country of Danish, Mikkelsen speaks fluent Swedish, German and English and has also mastered several accents. According to Mikkelsen's account his sources, he learned English from his older brother by listening to Monty Python recordings and watching the comedy sketches.
